Heat pumps and dynamic tariffs: Viessmann Climate Solutions and Ostrom enter into partnership to optimize heat pumps
The German energy provider Ostrom and the heat pump pioneer Viessmann Climate Solutions are entering into a partnership. The Viessmann heat pump control system will be integrated into the Ostrom app. As a first step, Ostrom customers will be able to choose a green, dynamic electricity tariff for their Viessmann heat pump from 2025.

- Sales partnership launched in the Ostrom Store
- The aim of the partnership: to make green energy affordable and seamless to use
Berlin, 12/11/2024 – Green pioneers join forces: German energy provider Ostrom and heat pump pioneer Viessmann Climate Solutions are entering into a partnership to optimize the operation of heat pumps.
Germany aims to achieve climate-neutral heating by 2045, and the focus for decentralized heating solutions is on the use of heat pumps. They are seen as the heating system of the future, with the current German government aiming to install up to 500,000 heat pumps per year to replace old gas and oil heating systems. The heat pumps are to be operated primarily with electricity from renewable energies. The problem: while homeowners with photovoltaic (PV) systems produce more than enough electricity in summer, the PV yield in winter is far from sufficient.
The solution is dynamic electricity tariffs. Because low electricity exchange prices do not only exist in summer. Electricity from wind energy makes a significant contribution to power generation throughout the year. Particularly high shares of electricity generation from wind energy occur in the winter and spring months. In January and February 2024, around 42% of net electricity generation came from wind energy. This means that customers can also save significant amounts of money in winter and operate their heat pumps even more economically and ecologically.
Heat pumps and dynamic tariffs for holistically affordable green energy
“We are opening up our energy management components for external control, both for grid efficiency and for using external price signals. We are therefore delighted that Ostrom, as a pioneer in dynamic electricity tariffs, is working with Viessmann Climate Solutions and taking a holistic approach to the operation of heat pumps,” explains Norbert Neuhaus, Head of Sales for Energy Supply Companies at Viessmann Germany.
“To this end, we will integrate the Viessmann heat pump control system into the Ostrom app. As a first step, Ostrom customers will be able to select a green, dynamic electricity tariff for the operation of their Viessmann heat pump from 2025. Further options are then conceivable, such as the direct integration of dynamic electricity tariffs into the Viessmann ViCare app. This will ensure that our customers have all the information they need in one place in the future, giving them the option of price-optimized operation of a Viessmann heat pump.”
Making green energy a cost-effective and seamless experience is at the heart of the partnership, explains Matthias Martensen, Co-Founder and CEO of Ostrom: “Dynamic electricity tariffs are an important lever for households to optimize their energy costs. They can benefit directly from low electricity prices, even when operating the heat pump. Our partnership with Viessmann Climate Solutions also shows that there are still many levers in the energy industry to innovatively shape sustainability.”
