Viessmann Germany builds third largest solar thermal plant in Germany

In July 2024, construction of the third-largest solar thermal plant in Germany began in Stralsund, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The plant will generate over 11 GWh per year, which corresponds to more than 10% of the heat demand from renewable energies.

The piping system developed with LOGSTOR reduces installation time thanks to prefabricated elements and allows for minimal trench widths. The use of a soil separator also allows the excavated material to be reused and reduces the need for sand.
  • Reduced ecological footprint in Stralsund
  • Innovative installation technology with greater focus on efficiency, environmental protection and occupational safety

Allendorf (Eder)/Stralsund, 14.11.2024 – The construction of Germany's third-largest district heating system powered by solar thermal energy is progressing smoothly. 50% of the pipe installation has been completed and the installation of the collectors has begun. Viessmann Deutschland GmbH, a Viessmann Climate Solutions company, is responsible for the construction of the turnkey project, which is being realized on behalf of SWS Energie Stralsund. The solar thermal system is scheduled to be ready for operation in May 2025. Viessmann Climate Solutions is a company of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), the global market leader for intelligent climate and energy solutions.

In Stralsund in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, construction of Germany's third-largest solar thermal system to date began in July 2024. The system will produce over 11 GWh per year, which corresponds to a renewable energy share of more than 10 percent of heating requirements. It will have a collector field with a total area of 24,361 square meters – the equivalent of around five soccer pitches. The plant is expected to be fully operational in May 2025 and from then on contribute to a significant reduction in  CO₂ emissions in Stralsund.

An intelligent piping system developed with LOGSTOR will be used in the collector field. It has been developed to increase quality and minimize installation time. Everything is prepared in production. During installation, care is taken to reduce the environmental impact and achieve a high level of occupational safety.

Less sand is used because a soil separator is employed for the reuse of excavated material. Only a small amount of sand is added to meet the specifications for the installed plastic-coated composite pipe. For this reason, the impact in the area where the collector field is installed is limited, ensuring minimal disturbance to local birds and animals. Finally, there is minimal impact on the land, as no wide trenches are dug; only the necessary amount is excavated. This results in a low impact on habitats and biotopic areas.

The project also places great emphasis on the well-being of the workers in the field and the welders. This also means that there are no employees lying in the wet and cold trenches. The project uses special trailers with battery packs instead of small gasoline generators. This results in low noise and emission levels for nature and workers. These trailers are used for welding and assembling joints.

“We are proud to have been chosen as a partner for the development of the third largest solar thermal district heating system in Germany and that we can implement our special installation concept in Stralsund,” says Dr. Frank Voßloh, Managing Director of Viessmann Germany.

The solar thermal system is part of an iCHP project. This means an innovative combination of renewable energies and an efficient combined heat and power machine. The iCHP system consists of a CHP system, in this case a combined heat and power plant with heat pump, an “innovative” renewable heat generator, a solar thermal system and a heat storage unit. Together, the two systems will produce district heating from renewable energies – saving many more tons of  CO₂ emissions each year.
