Career
At the age of seven, Markus develops an interest in ski jumping and begins training at TSV Siegsdorf. In 2011, he joins the DSV Continental Cup team, becoming a permanent member of the World Cup team beginning in 2013/14. In 2017, Markus wins the bronze medal in individual and becomes world champion in mixed team competition at the World Cup in Lahti. Two years later, Markus becomes triple world champion at the World Cup in Seefeld and achieves his first World Cup victory in ski flying in Planica. In the 2020/21 season, Markus starts as a “high-flyer”; on the first two World Cup weekends he takes first and second, respectively. At the highlight of the season, the World Championships in Oberstdorf, he wins gold medals number five and six in the men's team event and with the mixed team. Just one year later, Markus finally fulfills his dream of an Olympic medal. He wins the bronze medal in the team event at the Beijing Games. In addition, he becomes vice world champion in the team at the Ski Flying World Championships in Vikersund this season.
German youth champion
Markus wins gold in individual and in the team competition at the 2009 German Youth Championships.
First podium finish
In February 2011, Markus secures his first podium finish in a Continental Cup jump.
World Cup debut
At the end of 2011, Markus makes his World Cup debut at the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf, where he comes in 30th place. During a training jump in 2012, he falls and suffers a thoracic vertebra fracture.
Competitions in the Continental Cup
This season, Markus competes in the Continental Cup after the new year.
Bronze at the German Championships and first victory
Markus wins bronze in the team competition at the 2013 German Championships in Oberstdorf. In 2014, he claims his first victories in the Continental Cup and then has the opportunity to compete in several World Cup events as well as the Ski Flying World Championships in Harrachov.
First World Cup victory with the team
Markus wins his first Ski Jumping World Cup in the team event in Klingenthal and is a permanent starter in the World Cup this season.
Individual competitions in the World Cup
Markus predominantly competes in the Continental Cup this season and takes part in individual events in the World Cup.
Many successes: world champion and German champion
Markus wins the gold medal in the team competition at the 2016 German Championships in Oberhof. Markus is a permanent starter in the World Cup and secures numerous top 10 placements. At the 2017 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Markus becomes world champion in the mixed team event and wins the bronze medal in individual. This season, he also sets a new German distance record of 248 m on the ski flying hill in Planica.
Participation in the Olympic Games
Markus takes 8th and 14th place in the Olympic Games. He also achieves his best World Cup result in the individual jumping event in Lahti, coming in at second place.
Three-time world champion
Markus secures second place at Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the 2019 Four Hills Tournament. He also takes second place in the overall ranking. He returns from the 2019 Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld as a three-time world champion. Markus secures the gold medal in the individual large hill competition and in both the team and mixed team events, having never won an individual jumping event before. After his victory in Seefeld, Markus secures his first World Cup victory in an individual jumping event in ski flying in Planica and thus takes the lead in the overall World Cup.
A season of ups and downs
This season, Markus is unable to match the level of his success in 2018/19. His best result is second place in the Raw Air competition in Lillehammer. Shortly afterwards, the season was cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic and Markus no longer had the opportunity to build on the good performance from Lillehammer.
Two times team gold at the World Championships and second in the overall World Cup
Markus experiences an outstanding sporting year this season. In addition to numerous podium and top-10 finishes, he is crowned double world champion at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf. He won gold in both the men's team event and the mixed team event, taking home world championship titles number five and six. He is also in good form at the Ski Flying World Championships in Planica, taking bronze in the individual event and the silver medal in the team event. At the end of the season, Markus takes second place in the overall World Cup.
Olympic bronze and silver at the Ski Flying World Championships
This season is also extremely successful for Markus. In the World Cup he is one of the top jumpers as usual. At the absolute highlight of the season, the Olympic Games in Beijing, Markus finally fulfills his dream of an Olympic medal and wins the bronze medal in the team event. To crown a successful season, he also becomes Vice World Champion in the team at the Ski Flying World Championships in Vikersund.
Highs and lows
At the 2023 World Championships in Planica, Markus finishes in fifth place twice in the team competition and in the individual competition on the large hill, narrowly missing out on the medals. He also made it onto the World Cup podium twice this season: Third place in the individual competition in Sapporo and third place with the team in Zakopane. However, the following 2023/24 season does not go according to plan for Markus: after failing to qualify for the World Cup, he takes a longer break from competition and then competes in the Continental Cup. He was able to celebrate two victories there, among other things.
